Questions to ask a Wedding DJ
-
Do you offer a written contract?
Yes. Not all of the DJs you interview may have the same standards of professionalism. A written, legal contract is one of the first indicators of whether a DJ is professional and reliable. Furthermore, a contract establishes the DJ’s obligation to the client and outlines what is required for the DJ’s success, such as setup requirements and other performance factors. For this reason, a written contract is essential, and any DJ not using one should not, in my opinion, be considered for a wedding reception. -
May we meet the DJ before we sign a contract?
Certainly! Many DJ or event companies will try to get clients to sign a contract without speaking with their DJ first. Asking couples to simply trust that whoever the company sends to perform at their wedding will be good is a terrible idea. The only way you will truly know whether the DJ is right for your wedding is by interviewing them before signing a contract. Your "gut feeling" is important in selecting the right DJ, and you’ll be in a tough spot if you only meet your DJ a week before your wedding and realize they aren’t a good match. -
How long will you hold our date for us?
When you contact a DJ, they should be willing to hold your date for a reasonable amount of time to give you a chance to meet with them. They should also give you ample time after your meeting to make a decision and interview other DJs. Some DJs use pressure sales tactics to “close” you at the meeting, offering a special sale that ends that day or claiming another couple is meeting with them for the same date—trying to force you to make a decision on the spot. Any DJ using these tactics is unprofessional and is likely trying to prevent you from meeting other DJs, who they know may be a better fit. One week is a reasonable amount of time to expect your date to be held after an initial meeting. -
How long have you been a DJ, and how many weddings have you done?
I have 20 years of experience. A wedding is such an important occasion, and you do not want your DJ’s first wedding to be your own. The number of years someone has been a DJ can give you an idea of their experience level, but some DJs only perform a few events (and fewer weddings) each year. A DJ with fewer years in the industry might have done many more weddings than someone who’s been in the industry longer. Also, ask if the DJ has formal training, either from a DJ company or a DJ school. -
How many other types of events do you do per year?
Different DJs focus on different types of events—some consider themselves a "jack of all trades" and claim expertise in all types of events, while others are specialists. The ratio of weddings to other events the DJ performs at will give you an idea of their focus. If you are looking for a "low-key" wedding DJ, someone who mainly does school dances may not be the best fit for the sophisticated presentation you want for your wedding. -
Do you perform for more than one event in a day?
No, we take only one booking per day. Some DJs try to do as many events as they can, often packing their weekends with different types of DJ work. If a DJ has already performed at an event earlier in the day, they may be physically exhausted by the time your wedding starts, which is when they need to be most alert. This is especially common at large agencies where "weekend warriors" may perform at multiple events over the weekend. It's hard to believe any DJ could give that many couples the attention they deserve leading up to and on their wedding day. -
What makes you different from your competitors?
Any professional wedding DJ will take pride in their work and be able to answer this question honestly, explaining what makes their services unique. Some DJs, however, may use this opportunity to “bash” their competition. This behavior is unprofessional and reflects poorly on them. In fact, you might want to meet with any DJ they speak negatively about—DJs who engage in this behavior often target the DJs they feel you’ll book instead of them, and they might be right! -
Have you played at our reception site before?
Wedding experience is important, and familiarity with your reception site is a big advantage. Every venue presents different challenges—different load-in procedures, room configurations, acoustics, and even electrical outlets. Hiring a DJ who is familiar with your site will give you peace of mind that there won’t be any surprises on your wedding day. Even the best DJs can’t have performed at every venue, but if they haven’t been to yours, they should be willing to prepare by visiting the venue or speaking with the site contact in advance. -
Can we visit you at a performance?
Hopefully, the answer to this question is "no." You probably wouldn’t appreciate the DJ inviting prospective clients to your wedding to watch them in action. A professional DJ should respect their clients' privacy and not offer this as an option. Professional wedding DJs never allow this. -
May we speak to your references?
Speaking with a wedding DJ’s former clients is a great way to get a feel for what it’s like to work with them. Any DJ should be willing to let you speak with their references, and they should contact those references in advance to ask for permission so you feel comfortable reaching out to them. -
How do you keep your music collection up to date?
The majority of professional DJs subscribe to one or more music update services to keep their collections current. These services provide new, radio-edited music—often before it’s even released on the radio. Ask the DJ if they subscribe to any of these services and if they are SAMRO and SAMRA registered in order to perform legally. -
How involved can we be in selecting music for our event?
This is an important question because some DJs prefer to control most of the playlist, supplementing it with a few of your specific requests, while others let the client choose most of the music and then use their expertise to make it all work. The DJ should be accommodating to your music tastes, and you should feel comfortable with their approach and the amount of involvement you’ll have in choosing the music. -
Do you take requests from our guests?
We are happy to take requests, but you should also feel assured that any requests played will be in line with your tastes. -
When do you arrive to set up for our wedding?
Substandard DJs may have issues being punctual and setting up well in advance of your guests' arrival. Professional DJs will always arrive at least an hour before the scheduled start time to allow enough time for setup and preparation. Magic Moments' policy is to arrive at least an hour and a half before our scheduled start time. -
How much of a deposit is required to secure our date?
Almost every DJ will require some form of booking or retainer fee to secure your date. This is for both their protection and yours. The industry standard deposit is 50%. -
Do you bring backup equipment with you to the wedding?
Even the best and most well-maintained equipment can malfunction. Your DJ needs to be prepared for this eventuality by bringing a full backup sound system to every event. -
Do you have a wireless microphone?
Every professional wedding DJ should offer a wireless microphone for your guests’ toasts, blessings, and speeches. The industry standard for wireless microphones is Shure, and most professional DJs use Shure wireless technology. -
Do you set up a sign or banner with your equipment?
Shameless self-promotion sometimes appears at wedding receptions in the form of a sign or banner with the DJ’s company name and contact info. These signs often end up in wedding photos and videos, ruining what should be a commercial-free event. This practice is unprofessional, and we believe any DJ who engages in it should not be hired for a wedding.
